A Standalone Adventure for SpongeBob’s Best Friend.
Ever since the earliest seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants, Patrick Star captured the audience’s hearts as the ultimate sidekick to the main protagonist. Over time, as new seasons rolled out, leadership shifted, show policies evolved, and Nickelodeon’s overall approach to the franchise changed. However, one area where they consistently landed on their feet was the video game adaptations. While games based on animated shows rarely push boundaries or captivate hardcore gamers, they have almost always carried a uniquely cozy and nostalgic vibe. Patrick eventually became such an iconic figure that he earned his own spin-off series, which ultimately led to a dedicated video game. The pink starfish finally takes center stage, launching a brand-new timeline without SpongeBob in the lead role. Yet, right from the initial loading screen, it becomes evident that the project is essentially SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake re-imagined with a heavy emphasis on sandbox exploration and objective-free mini-games rather than traditional combat or enemy encounters.

This is an overly simplistic title aimed strictly at hardcore fans—though even the die-hard fanbase might think twice before picking it up. The core issue lies in its positioning: while built on the exact same engine, featuring the identical graphic style, and utilizing the same character models as SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake, it carries a surprisingly steep price tag. Where previous entries delivered full-fledged narrative campaigns, this release attempts to justify its premium cost through basic character dialogues. All the iconic residents of Bikini Bottom are back to their usual shenanigans with zero acknowledgement of past events. Initially, stepping into Patrick’s shoes is actually quite entertaining—SpongeBob remains the supportive best friend, Squidward is as hot-tempered as ever, and Mr. Krabs is still obsessed with money. However, since our pink hero was never one for heroic feats, his adventures boil down entirely to sandbox mini-games. You get the most fundamental activities imaginable: fetch quests, casual races, delivering Krabby Patties, and target shooting. While the franchise has seen similar mini-game compilations in the past, those were dated point-and-click titles; this entry is a fully 3D platforming experience designed for modern platforms. To keep you from getting lost in Bikini Bottom, the developers included a helpful map system. It clearly displays exact quest locations, highlights active NPCs, and marks which challenges you have attempted or completed. This implementation is a welcome quality-of-life feature, saving unnecessary backtracking and letting you jump straight to the main content. Yet the question remains: do these mini-games hold any real value? Players who have already experienced SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated or The Cosmic Shake will find no meaningful upgrades to visual fidelity or movement mechanics. Without epic set-pieces or grand-scale level design, seasoned veterans will likely lose interest very quickly.

Verdict:

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game is a genuinely hilarious, surprising, and eccentric title—one that nobody expected, yet somehow became a reality. Exploring Bikini Bottom, tackling challenges, and causing pure sandbox mayhem is undeniably fun, but the total package simply fails to justify its full price tag. Coming after massive, fully realized adventures in the franchise, this project feels more like a cash-in product than a complete game. If you are itching for a nostalgia trip back into SpongeBob's digital world, you are better off replaying the older titles, which offer far richer atmosphere and gameplay variety. You really want to love this game—and in many ways, it is fun—but it remains far from perfect and severely overpriced.

The controls are notably responsive, allowing you to quickly pick up and interact with objects throughout the environment. In fact, failing a task or causing utter chaos is often far more entertaining than completing the objectives themselves. That said, even during a smooth playthrough, you will occasionally encounter visual bugs and minor gameplay glitches. While these issues are not game-breaking—and can sometimes even be hilarious—their presence further reinforces the feeling that the title was rushed to market without rigorous polish or high-end quality assurance.
