Underrated with Dark Potential.
Contrast belongs to that rare category of games that only get better with age, even if they remain an acquired taste. That is the only way to explain the cool reception the title received upon release — a reaction it certainly didn't deserve. While the game remains largely overlooked today, it offers the exact kind of experience many players are starving for. It delivers precisely on its core promise — the shadow-shifting mechanic — rewarding player curiosity with secrets and rich narrative scenes. The project features an enchanting storyline, inventive puzzles, responsive controls, and great world interaction. However, it also carries flaws that cannot be ignored.

Set in the atmospheric, shadowed streets of 1920s Paris, the world is further elevated by an exceptional soundtrack. Visually, it may not match the fidelity of massive modern blockbusters, but its art direction remains genuinely pleasing to the eye. Players take control of Dawn, a silent protagonist who acts more as an observer than the center of the narrative. Early on, we are introduced to Didi — a brave young girl who sneaks out of her home to help her father, Johnny, establish his circus. Dawn assists Didi by navigating obstacles using agility and shadow manipulation. Throughout the journey, players witness the complex relationships between the characters, which are handled brilliantly. The cast feels remarkably grounded, and Didi's interactions with the complex adult world maintain a compelling emotional weight. However, the narrative leaves Dawn’s identity open to interpretation; only by thoroughly exploring the world and reading every collectible newspaper and card can players infer whether Dawn is an imaginary friend or Didi's biological mother.

The gameplay in Contrast is straightforward, yet it occasionally presents a satisfying challenge. Structured across 3 major acts subdivided into several chapters, the controls feel responsive as you walk, run, and merge into the shadows. Experimenting near light sources feels unrestrictive and fluid. Exploring hidden nooks rewards players with bonus scenes that flesh out the lore, alongside collectible artwork that is a joy to inspect. While shadow manipulation sounds simple on paper, such mechanics remain exceptionally rare in the gaming industry. Alternating between 3D navigation and 2D platforming keeps the puzzle-solving fresh. Getting stuck is rare, usually limited to dimly lit areas requiring heavy object manipulation. Played naturally, the game runs reliably well. While critics often cited bugs during fast movement or dimension-shifting, most physics glitches only occur if you actively try to break the game.
Nevertheless, a slight sense of emptiness sets in once the credits roll. Contrast lacks the content for a 10-hour campaign, leaving the impression that it ran out of ideas before fully realizing its scope. It is a shame, as the title possessed tremendous potential for a grander experience. Yet, this is hardly a dealbreaker — despite its mixed reception at launch, the game delivers a genuinely memorable journey.

Verdict:

A largely overlooked title that can easily stand head and shoulders above many bigger competitors. It is easy to sympathize with the characters — they don't have overly complex backstories, yet you remain fully invested in their journey. Its brief runtime never feels like a flaw; instead, Contrast delivers a unique experience that simply doesn't overstay its welcome.
